An overview of Agnès Varda's work, from her films to her visual works: collages, video art, installations and photographs (especially those made in Portugal in the 1950s).
Published to accompany the eponymous exhibition at Casa do Cinema Manoel de Oliveira, Fondation Serralves, in 2022, this book features contributions by António Preto (Director, Casa do Cinema and curator of the exhibition),
Hans Ulrich Obrist (art historian and curator),
Raymond Bellour (film scholar and writer), Nathalie Mauffrey (Université de Paris, ATER and researcher at Cérilac) and Sylvain Dreyer (Université de Pau). Lavishly illustrated with film stills, documents, and photographs, it also includes a series of potato recipes by some of Portugal's most acclaimed chefs associated with Varda's installation Patatutopia, a three-screen video installation with 1.500 pounds of potatoes on the floor that result in an immersive gallery experience.
A major figure in the development of the French New Wave, Agnès Varda (1928-2019) was a prolific filmmaker, photographer and installation artist. Her work was both personal and engaged with the world around her, often blurring the boundaries between documentary and fiction and focusing on her concerns with feminist issues, ecology and social conditions.
