Korakrit Arunanondchai -
First monograph by New York-based Thai artist Korakrit Arunanondchai, this publication is the first extensive presentation of the artist's video trilogy Painting with History, which ambitiously addresses a digital native's relationship with art history, spirituality, globalization, technology and self-promotion.
How does a young artist, a digital native, engage with issues like art history, history in general and spirituality on one hand, and globalization, technology and the need to self promote on the other? Hailing from Bangkok, Korakrit Arunanondchai tackles these questions from the perspective of an emigrè, culturally transplanted from Thailand to the United States, in a large installation based on the —entirely fictitious—figure of the denim painter.
Published following the exhibition “Painting with history 3 or two thousand five hundred and fifty nine years to figure stuff out”, Museion – Museo d'arte contemporanea di Bolzano, from June 1st, to September 11, 2016.
Korakrit Arunanondchai (born 1986 in Thailand, lives and works in New York) left Bangkok to attend the Rhode Island School of Design (2009) and Columbia University (2012). After having partaken in numerous group exhibitions (Sculpture Center, New York; ICA, London), Korakrit Arunanondchai conceived his own personal exhibitions notably at MoMA PS1 (New York, 2014), the Mistake Room (Los Angeles, 2014), and Palais de Tokyo (Paris, 2015).
