Back to Back

Mahtola Wittmer - Back to Back
The first comprehensive presentation of Swiss artist Mahtola Wittmer's work.
In her art, Mahtola Wittmer focuses on the interaction between you and I, between I and the world. What happens when people encounter one another? What happens when bodies come up against architecture? In her performances, the artist finds incisive and playfully humorous images for aspects of human relationships—for closeness, tension, support, repulsion, and attraction. The new series on paper dedicated to the human face is just as minimalist as her performances. On thousands of sheets, the artist examines how much or how little it takes to recognize a face. The publication can be read from both sides equally—back to back—allowing readers to become performers.
Mahtola Wittmer (born 1993) is an artist based in Lucerne, Switzerland. Her interdisciplinary practice straddles the media of photography, video, performance, drawing, objects, and installation. Her exhibits are often supplemented by performances exploring everyday trifles or overlooked things: Mahtola Wittmer is interested in small absurdities that pierce the veneer of normalcy.
