Inland Lake (le lac intérieur) (CD)

Lionel Marchetti, Decibel - Inland Lake (le lac intérieur) (CD)
The new alchemical collaboration between Australian chamber ensemble Decibel, and French music concrète composer Lionel Marchetti.
"Inland Lake was devised with the ensemble when Lionel visited Australia in 2019. As he sometimes does, he came with an 'partition concrète' that was part score, part ensemble member, part fixed media. The music is coaxed from the ensemble, without score, but with discussions, listening and experiments. In the live performances, Marchetti efficiently and imaginatively positions speakers in strange directions, heights and places and somehow, the sounds melt together, intertwining and indiscernible—as on this recording. Marchetti adapts the partition concrète after first  rehearsals and performances, integrating recordings of the acoustic instruments with synthesizers, tape and electronic manipulations in his home studio.
The recording of Inland Lake occurred in two places at once: at the Digital Hub, Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and Performance at Monash University, Melbourne and Soundfield Studio in Perth, Western Australia. Marchetti joined from France. Determined to make this recording despite the ongoing border closures within Australia and the world, the group came together telematically—using software to reduce the perception of latency and improve the sound quality 'down the line' for the performers. The ensemble was split in half between the east and west coasts of Australia, listening together over the Internet, recording locally. Marchetti later mixed and mastered the track in his own studio. Listening to the piece once the recording and mixing process was complete was like hearing it for the first time, again."

Lionel Marchetti (born 1967 in Marseille) is a French composer of concrete music and improviser (electronics, various analogic systems with modified speakers, REVOX reel-to-reel recorder…) as well as a visual-sound artist, a writer and a poet. Whether his music is composed or improvised the body has an important role.
Lionel Marchetti also writes poetry and essays on the art of musique concrète, as a practicing artist of the genre.
Decibel is a 6 piece new music ensemble focusing on the integration of acoustic and electronic instruments in chamber music performance, founded in Western Australia in 2009 by Louise Devenish, Cat Hope, Stuart James, Tristen Parr, Lindsay Vickery and Aaron Wyattin.
Decibel are world-leading interpreters of graphic notations and pioneer digital score formats for composition and performance. This includes the ongoing development of their successful Decibel ScorePlayer App for iPad, enabling coordinated performance of graphic notations. Whilst rooted in western art music tradition, Decibel aim to remove stylistic boundaries in their commissioning and performance approaches, which focus on the combination of acoustic and electronic sounds. The ensemble has collaborated with composers such as Eliane Radigue, Werner Dafeldecker, Agostino Di Scipio, Alvin Curran, David Toop, Marina Rosenfeld, Lionel Marchetti, Andreas Weixler and Johannes S. Sistermanns and worked with iconic Australian composers Jon Rose, Alan Lamb, Ross Bolleter, Warren Burt, Eric Griswold and Anthony Pateras. Decibel have contributed the Australian premieres of works by Fausto Romitelli, Tristan Murail, Alvin Lucier, Peter Ablinger, Mauricio Kagel and have toured and recorded monograph concerts dedicated to Roger Smalley, Alvin Lucier, John Cage and Giacinto Scelsi.
