“The Roots of Signs”—solo exhibition dedicated to the art of etching in Hartung's work—has been inaugurated on the 12th of December 2013. This exhibition co-organized by the Hartung-Bergman foundation and the Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica of Rome were hosted by the Palazzo Poli. It led to the publication of a catalog centered around a text written by the art critic Achille Bonito Oliva. This exhibition follows a donation of 138 etchings made by the foundation to the Italian institution. This donation is reproduced in its integrality in the catalogue.
In 2010 Hartung's works on paper were published in the catalogue raisonné online. After the travelling exhibition “Hans Hartung Estampes/Druckgraphik” organized the same year first in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France then at the Staatliche Museen of Berlin before ending at the Musées d'art et d'histoire de Genève, “The Roots of Signs” testifies once again of the relevance of this side of Hartung's work which appears like a new insight for a critical approach into his artworks.
German-French painter Hans Hartung (1904-1989) is one of the most important representatives of abstract art. His work is associated with Lyrical abstraction, Informalism, and Ecole de Paris.
