A remake of Pieter Brueghel the Elder in the form of an artist's poster/book to unfold (and perform).
The poster-book Discreet works (after Brueghel) is a remake of The Flemish Proverbs, a painting dated 1559. In a line drawing, Watier keeps the actions shown on the painting and captions each with its associated proverb while highlighting its potential performative dimension. The translated proverb becomes a suggested action distinct from the initial figurative meaning. Thus, Brueghel's work becomes a painting to perform.
Eric Watier first exposed Discreet works (thanks to Bruegel) in collaboration with Chun-Yi Chang in the collective exhibition To Martian Anthropologists that took place in Taipei (Taïwan) at the New Taipei City Arts Center in 2020.
Éric Watier has made the "artist's book" his artistic practice. Often simple in appearance, and free for the most part, his publications take various forms: booklets, posters, leaflets, postcards, blocks, etc.
