The Room of the Octopus

Loïc Raguénès - The Room of the Octopus
Expanding on and developing Loïc Raguénès' series of "Seascapes" and introducing new "Planet" paintings and an individual depiction of an interior, this last monograph explores the fundamental tenets of painting while touching upon the universal yet ever-important notion of our presence in the world.
Published following Loïc Raguénès' exhibition "Extra Sweet Harmony (The Room of the Octopus)" at C L E A R I N G, Brussels, in 2021.
French painter Loïc Raguénès (1968-2022) digitally decomposed miscellaneous photographs by applying a web of half-tones, then carefully painted the result with light monochrome shades, emphasizing the abstract dimension of the image. An elegant "neo-pointillist" work that involves the status of the reproduced image, as well as representation, optical sensing, memory and emotions conveyed by the contemporary iconography. Abandoning the small dots in the early 2010s, he explored other pictorial expressions through monochromatic landscapes just as nostalgic and dreamy.
Texts by Anne Pontégnie, Franck Gautherot, Martin Germann.
