Typologie is a collection of design books about ordinary objects. This issue dedicated to the wine bottle features a photographic section with 60 silhouettes of rare or common bottles; a geography of forms, from Bordeaux to Alsace; a photographic report in the glassworks of Albi; a conversation between a botte-maker, a winemaker and a collector of ancient bottles.
The wine bottle, inseparable from its cork, is a little-noticed object whose refinements discreetly embellish our tables. Although it might kindle profound hesitations when chosen, the bottle is always presented to us behind its label. Once uncorked, we are instantly distracted by its content, and rarely give it any attention. Yet, its shape speaks to all our senses: its nuances, its weight, its roughness or its roundness. Thus, we forget that its well-known silhouette is the result of a slow evolution. Initially stretched by the blow-moulding process, it was one of the first industrialized objects. Through time, it found its precise volume, its collar adapted to the cork and the curves that remained expressed its terroir. This wine prop is here studied in all its forms from the fused silica to tailored standards.
Typologie is a series of
design publications that takes the reader on a journey to the heart of everyday objects. Each volume is devoted to one ordinary object. It inventories its numerous shapes, explores his manufacturing process, details its history and highlight its enduring relevance through the voices of passionate specialists. Each issue is published in English and French versions.
Each issue features two sections: The first one is printed in tri-color on thick paper, and presents a series of original photos of ancient and contemporary objects, faithfully reproduced. The second one is printed in color on thin paper and contains authors' texts, a crossed interview, a factory documentary and archive images.
Text by Philippe Louguet, conversation between Fabrice Domercq, José Garcia, Thierry de Putter.
