Despite its deceptive simplicity, the grid carries a rich and complex history in the arts. From linear perspective to 3D modelling, the motif's many manifestations reveal its evocative power and its ability to engage with reality, its systems, and its structures. This issue's contributions explore the graphic, spatial and temporal possibilities that emerge from the grid and its outside, and pose the question: What kinds of spaces does it construct?
