Catalog of an exhibition that presents the discourse and developments in the arts of Saudi Arabia that took place between 1959 and the 1980s, highlighting a group of Saudi artists who contributed to shaping the identity of the local art movement.
Informed deeply by their roots, and influenced by their environments, the works in this exhibition are a testament to how artists take inspiration from nature, history, architecture, tradition, and customs, and respond to contemporary events and societal circumstances, cultural and literary trends, as well as economic, cultural, and social factors.
The artworks on view touch upon numerous subjects, including natural and urban landscapes, and people and their relation to the environment, culture, and tradition. The exhibition curation was grounded in research and study of the available sources, as well as interviews with the artists and their families, and with specialists in the field.
Published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at Misk Art Institute, Riyad, in 2024.
