Brown W. Cannon III - North
Through powerful portraits and incredible surf scenes, Brown W. Cannon III's book NORTH chronicles the lives of surf people—and the community around them—along the North Shore of O'ahu, Hawaii.
For the past 6 years Cannon has photographed portraits against a 3x9 meter seamless gray background. You are able to study every detail of equipment, their faces and feel their power. The large format (31,8 x 43,2 cm) of this book transports the observer into the inner circle of the North Shore, making the strength of the waves and the people almost physically perceptible. In addition to Cannon's decades-long passion for surfing and photography, NORTH is inspired by his family roots, which have made Hawaii home since the 1920's.
Oregon-based photographer Brown W. Cannon III has traveled the world photographing award-winning stories for editorial and commercial clients, including Travel & Leisure, Conde Nast, National Geographic Adventure, Outside, GEO Saison and Copalli Rum. His photography has been exhibited in solo and group shows in galleries and museums throughout the U.S. In 2018, he founded no2plastic.org, a nonprofit dedicated to reducing single-use plastics.
Brown W. Cannon III studied photography at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena California and graduated with honors in the Fall of 1999. He was named one of the 30 under 30 photographers to watch by Photo District News.
