It is against the background of an unprecedented situation that Azimuts magazine published by ESADSE (Saint-Étienne Higher School of Art and design) invited researchers to talk about their work and thinking in this issue. Within and outside of their usual frameworks and fields of investigation, they document a sensitive and critical perception of a reality on hold due to the pandemic.
The virus, along with its global representation and voracious appetite for human populations, taken as pretexts for experimenting with collective forms for recording and analyzing social and cultural processes vectorized as a result of the pandemic, is the central focus of this issue. The collection of experiments linked to Covid 19 creates a corpus that models and analyses this global experience, where daily life seems both to be exempt from any common rules and yet to draw on some radical principles.
An ad hoc editorial process La Cabane The researchers on the CyDRe (the Design Research Cycle at ESADSE), led by Cuban Ernesto Oroza, are joined by leading figures from a variety of fields: Yann Philippe Tastevin, anthropologist at the CNRS, Lionel Cordier, researcher in political science, Émilie Girard, Scientific Director of the Mucem, Tiphaine Kazi-Tani, researcher at ESADSE, Gean Moreno, Director of ICA Miami and Art+Research Center in Miami, the disnovation.org, collective and Nicolas Nova, anthropologist-researcher. A publication unique in its form and graphic approach La Cabane At the instigation of guest graphic designer Juliette Nier, Esadse Esadse the magazine's design has been radically recast to fit the methodology. Azimuts 52 consists of 4 print components: a booklet containing texts, accounts, essays, etc., a tabloid larger than the Azimuts magazine itself containing the corpus of 239 descriptions of press reports and opinion pieces, a wraparound band and a sticker.
Azimuts is a design research journal founded in 1991 by the student-researchers of the post-graduate program of the École supérieure d'art et design de Saint-Étienne. A unique publication in the design editorial landscape, the journal is a place for reflection, exchange, and criticism on the issues of contemporary design and art, as well as a field for experimentation and graphic and typographic research. Azimuts magazine gathers the points of view of personalities from the world of design, culture and research in general. The issues are organized around thematic dossiers on design and, more generally, on material culture or its criticism. The "Varia" section welcomes contributions that are not part of the dossier, and the "Anthology" section allows readers to discover or rediscover texts and documents that are difficult to access (out of print or never translated into French). The "Reviews" section is a space for free criticism of current research and publications on design in the field.
