Ben Alper and Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa present visual unknowns and forgotten gestures from the defunct archives of American mid-century news photography. Carefully curated and collated, their iconographic essay, a Bilderatlas of sorts, explores in depth the notion of "hide," and of what forces normative relations to the visible serve to veil. How can, how should these images be looked at? And how do they unsettle the contemporary gaze?
Ben Alper est un artiste et un éditeur basé en Caroline du Nord. Il est l'un des trois membres de Sleeper, un studio d'édition travaillant avec la photographie et le texte, et cofondateur de A New Nothing, un espace en ligne qui facilite les conversations visuelles entre artistes. Son travail a été exposé et publié au niveau national et international.
Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa est photographe et écrivain. Il a publié des essais dans divers magazines, monographies et anthologies, et qui a exposé son travail dans le monde entier. Il est directeur du programme de maîtrise en photographie à la Rhode Island School of Design.
