Politiques du visible Dorothea Lange - Politiques du visible
The portfolio of the exhibition at the Jeu de Paume.
Published in conjunction with the Jeu de Paume's exhibition Politics of Seeing, this portfolio features a selection of nearly fifty iconic works by the American documentary photographer Dorothea Lange (1895–1965), who tirelessly sought to denounce injustice and change public opinion. Her intimate and poignant images were also rooted in her ability to connect with her subjects, what can be seen in the five specific series featured here: the Depression period (1932–1934), a selection of works from the Farm Security Administration (1935–1941), the Richmond shipyards (1942–1944), the Japanese-American internment (1942) and a series on a public defender (1955–1957). Enriched with analytical commentaries focused on specific themes, this publication situates her majestic works within the social documentary context of the 1930s and 1940s, highlighting the artistic qualities and strength of political conviction that make her work a landmark in the history of photography.
Published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at the Jeu de Paume, Paris, in 2018-2019.
