Monographic study dedicated to director, video artist and photographer Clarisse Hahn. Edited by
Nicole Brenez, the publication gathers writings encompassing the variety of her work, from contemporary art to cinema,
guerilla groups, and
eroticism; conversations with Clarisse Hahn, artists, and art historians; and a series of reproductions of her artworks, photographs, photograms, and videograms.
Confronting the intensity of the body as flesh, as phantasm, as organic-ness that is accommodated by rituals and social constructs yet ultimately resists all symbolization, without judging or even describing anything, Clarisse Hahn's work lashes out at pulsating life in the raw. Each piece overexposes a somatic state that is simultaneously biologically ordinary and socially extreme. The book Clarisse Hahn: Politics of Presence incorporates three approaches: contributed writings from the various spheres that are central to the work, from contemporary art to cinema, guerilla groups, and eroticism; thinking that emerges unprompted from dialogues between Clarisse Hahn, artists, and art historians; and reproductions of (and commentary on) the artworks, photographs, photograms, and videograms. The motif becomes the subject and sheds light on its own imagery.
Clarisse Hahn (born 1973 in Paris, where she lives and works) is a director, videographer and photographer. Through her
films,
photographs and
video installations, Clarisse Hahn follows a research on communities, behavioral codes, and the social role of the body. She is professor of video art at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris.
