Supporting Role

Jason Hirata - Supporting Role
In his practice, Jason Hirata often demonstrates support, highlighting dependencies and contingencies that are just as inherent in artistic production as they are elsewhere. Supporting Role brings together a collection of the artist's writings from 2019 to 2024. Comprising checklists, press releases, visual descriptions, exhibition reviews, invoices, and curricula vitae, these are texts built from the supporting documents of an artistic practice, while simultaneously offering further support.
The "Wiggle Room" series charts a range of practices that in their journey across the platforms, conditions, and constraints of the art context have created new frameworks within which to orient their productions, personas, and purposes.
Jason Hirata (born 1986 in Seattle) is a contemporary multimedia artist who uses his work to address technology, language, and social and cultural issues in the world today. He uses historical frames of reference to discuss our present world as well as utilizing technology and contemporary art practices. He gives vague meaning to the viewer, but allows them to approach the work and take the meaning from it that they will.
Hirata holds a BFA in photography from the University of Washington. He was the fourth artist to receive The Brink Award in 2015.
