Damien Cabanes

Painting as such encompasses the artistic practice of Damien Cabanes (born 1959 in Suresnes, France, lives and works in Paris.) who experiments just as easily within sculpture as within drawing. Since the end of the 1980's, each period associated with a specific work space sees him explore a new medium or a new gesture, pushing these to the limits of their foundation, filling the studio to saturation point: the minimal paintings, the coloured marks, then, following the grids and the self-portraits, and from 1994, the abandonment of a two-dimensional approach in favour of “a multi-dimensional pictorial space”. The sculptures take the form of cubes, cylinders, cones, spheres, spirals, in plaster or polystyrene, often painted, and human figures in clay, often enamelled. In 2006 Damien Cabanes also returns to painting.
