A publication project about listening and sound relations.
This book is the result of one year of listening at Le Parc Beaulieu in 2017-2018. This work is about listening and the different paths our sensation and understanding of a place follow through the ever-changing experience of sound, although happening in familiar environments and with the same vocabulary. With the notes and drawings from their handbooks, Anouck Genthon and Antoine Läng built a circular and immersive narrative kept in a book with no beginning and no end, as an invitation for the reader to share this continuous experience and reflection about what and how we actually hear.
Born in France, Anouck Genthon is a violinist, improviser and ethnomusicologist based in Geneva. She anchors her work in the development of her own improvised language through the experience of sound and listening. She likes to engage in transversal forms of research forms and she plays in various contexts at the crossroads of improvised, experimental, contemporary, electroacoustic and traditional music through different projects from solo to large ensembles. Her work is published by Newwaveofjazz, Another Timbre, Confront Recordings, UNRec, Insub. Records, Le petit label, Thödol, Gamut Edition. She is a member of @ptt collective (promotion of acoustic art in the fields of music, language and visual arts) and Insub. in Geneva. She is the author of Tuareg Music. From political symbolism to aesthetic singularization (L'Harmattan, 2012).
Living in Geneva, Antoine Läng dedicates an important part of his work to the raw voice and the extended vocal apparatus, by means of augmented techniques and various acoustic devices. The voice is explored from the breath and the physical mechanisms that can produce sound gestures specific to the body and the place in which they are deployed. This relationship to space is currently being extended to other features of his musical work, mainly oriented towards listening to and receiving places envisaged as sound spaces that the performance aims to make heard. He sings in Le Recueil des Miracles, Babeleon, Giallo Oscuro, screams in Cortez, whispers and breathes in Insub xtet and Insub Meta Orchestra, considers sounds from places with Olga Kokcharova (duo Kokhlias and Loulan) and with Anouck Genthon or from the mouth with Jason Kahn and solo, He participates in the programming committee of the Akouphène festival in Geneva. He is also part of INSUB, a collective whose associative activities focus on the development of the experimental music scene in Geneva and Switzerland.
