At the crossroads of an artist book and a graphic novel, Fawda is an ode to Casablanca's life, presented through a non-linear narrative inspired by vox-pops.
After Vaudou, a graphic novel depicting the digressions of the main character, Fawda (moroccan arabic word for “chaos”) is Hicham Lasri second graphic experience. It is an ode to Casablanca's life, presented through a non-linear narrative inspired by vox-pops. The soul of the city, that of its inhabitants, of urban legends, gestures, and places somehow poeticised. At the crossroads of an artist book and a graphic novel, Fawda shatters the codes of the comic strip, as the author refuses stick to the classical speech bubble, to the benefit of cut-ups, superimposing styles and narrative layers. The entire book is driven by the moves voracious gaze. Fawda is published alongside of the 5th Masnaâ festival devoted to comics, graphic design and to the Beirut experimental music scene.
Published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at Galerie 121, Institut français, Casablanca, from May 10 to July 15, 2017, and the 5th Masnaâ festival, Casablanca and Rabat, from May 8 to 14, 2017.
