A new architecture of ruin, using wood and steel from the Baumettes prison in Marseille.
Published following the exhibition "Du béton, de l'acier et de la viande" (Concrete, steel and meat) designed by Nicolas Daubanes, presented at La Maréchalerie art center in 2023, this edition aims to give an account of the genesis of a material. How cell doors (wood and steel) from the Baumettes prison in Marseille, detached from their use and recycled through the activities of Montpellier's Ressourceries, become the subject of research by artist Nicolas Daubanes: artworks (devices, performances, sculptures) presented in several places and contexts, and new intentions in progress. The aim is to share the story of the material transformation circuit, and its polysemy.
Nicolas Daubanes (born 1983) is a French artist based in Perpignan. Since the end of the 2000s, he has been working on a series of drawings, installations and videos based on immersive residencies in prisons, questioning all modes of confinement and the social forms that shape life, death and the human condition.
Contributions by Juliette Belleret, Dylan Caruso, Géraldine Marx, Nicolas Daubanes.
