An ethnographic wander in the streets of Paris.
This publication gathers three works that deal with Stéphane Breton's documentary, Le monde extérieur (The outside world). In this film, the filmmaker-ethnologist wanders Paris, day and night, questioning forms of the ordinary, searching the formless, and the solitary souls, all while addressing a friend "from a distant country". This book includes the transcript of the film, enriched with an interview and analysis of Breton's filmic work, both carried out by Jonathan Larcher. The whole presents an opportunity to take a deeper look into Stéphane Breton's singular approach, to appreciate its poetic force and to reflect on the issues raised by visual anthropology.
