Cahier du Cirva

Estrid Lutz - Cahier du Cirva
Three years of research into glass by the Mexico-based French artist.
Estrid Lutz's sculptures, made from industrial materials used in aeronautics and aerospace, work like inter-space portals, 'aerial oceans' flirting with the underwater abyss and the immensity of space. During her residency at the Cirva from 2020 to 2023, Estrid Lutz wanted to conduct "experimental cosmic journeys with no limits." There, the artist developed a series of glass works with unidentifiable shapes, forming complete environments, 'aqua worlds', like micro-organisms observed under the lens of a microscope. These forms, sometimes luminescent, sometimes transparent, sometimes bicomponent, reveal their intermediary nature, their suspended existence, like phosphorescent plankton leaving trails of light in their wake.
This Cahier du Cirva is dedicated to her research. Like a giant wave off the coast of Mexico, the images that intermingle and crash across the pages plunge us into the world of the artist, whose pieces, floating in this wave, are its infravies. The book features a text by Dorothée Dupuis, a curator, art critic and publisher based in Mexico, and an interview with the artist, Stanislas Colodiet, director of the Cirva, and Camille Frasca, director of La Citadelle – Centre d'art & Musées de Villefranche-sur-Mer, to tell the story of this 'sensitive chaos', which will be on show in an eponymous exhibition in summer 2024.
Estrid Lutz (born 1989) is a French artist and a graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. Since 2018, the artist has been living and working in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico, where she combines her artistic approach with her fascination with the ocean through surfing.
