It is said that there are many types of artists : those who invent codes and those who use them, those who blow air and those who create, those who persist and those who leave their signature, those who succeed and those who hang around, those who arrive early or late… Michel Würthle is one of those types. Having arrived at mid life, he defends himself quite well, using drawing as a “necessary sublimation of pain and solitude”, an elegant escape at the risk of sexual frustration. This prudish fable on the retreat of wisdom is full of his characteristic irony and black humor. Würtle might be seen as a gang artist, one who rallied around
Martin Kippenberger, or more precisely around the Berlin section of this dangerous group. In fact he comes in the wake of a whole band of crually compassionate deficators of modern art : Max Beckmann,
Otto Dix, Georg Grosz who inspired Würthle to take up the scapel.
