A collective photography project that explore the borders between artistic research and scientific investigation, with special reference to the study of dark matter and dark energy.
What happens when the fundamental substance of our universe remains indifferent to our methods of detection? In a hyper-mediated age defined by a constant flux of images, what does it mean to acknowledge a reality that we cannot visualize?
On the Edge of the Eyelid explores a proximity existing just beyond our perceptual reach. It examines the tension between knowing and seeing through the work of Fabio Barile, Ezio D'Agostino, and Luca Spano, three artists who take contemporary research on dark matter and dark energy as an unstable springboard for their practice. This invisible architecture constitutes approximately 95% of the cosmos, forcing us to confront a state where reality is physically present but optically absent.
Published following the eponymous exhibition at Nivola Museum, Orani, in 2025.
Fabio Barile (born 1980 in Barletta) lives and works in Rome. He focuses his practice primarily on the study of landscape, with particular attention to geology, that has become the subject of intensive independent investigation.
Ezio D'Agostino (born 1979 in Vibo Valentia) is an Italian photographer based in Marseille.
Luca Spano (born 1982) is an Italian artist. His research engages with the representational frameworks through which realities are generated and perceived. Spano explores the threshold between the visible and the invisible as a site where new worlds can emerge. His methodology draws from socio-anthropological premises, connecting speculative practices, sensory experiences, data, beliefs, and the aesthetics of language. Within this frame, he has developed ongoing dialogues with scientific disciplines, exploring the uncertainty of human and non-human processes of knowledge construction. this often leads him to collaborate with institutions across diverse fields, cultivating open exchanges at the intersection of art and science with scholars, researchers, and members of specific communities. Spano's practice unfolds through media such as text, image, installation, and sculpture. These elements are assembled to form ecologies of interconnected references—spaces for contemporary poetics of the unknown. Alongside his artistic practice, Luca Spano is also an educator committed to experimental collaborative practices centered on knowledge sharing and community-building.
