Different exercises of decomposition and recomposition of the same drawing, the representation of a landscape (rtist's book).
For his solo show at Florence Loewy in 2025, José Quintanar presents Dutch Landscape 21, 22 & 23, different exercises of decomposition and recomposition of the same drawing, the representation of a landscape. Dutch Landscape 21 is an inventory of 41 wooden forms taken from the original drawing, conceived to spread out in the gallery space. In Dutch Landscape 22, the artist used them as tools to compose new landscapes. Dutch Landscape 23 is a publication listing all these 41 tools, reproduced to scale 1.
Jose Quintanar (born 1984 in Madrid, lives and works in Amsterdam) is an artist with a background in comics and architecture. Using the book as the principal format for his work, José explores the possibilities of drawing as a game and the ways in which it serves as a primary method to establish processes based on rudimentary rules.
He founded a publishing project Ruja Press / "This was a project, but we have forgotten what it was", a space spacewhere to explore and experiment with the format of the book. He is the author of a thesis entitled "The book as public space."
