This book contains preliminary graphic designs for paintings from 1986-1990. The artist's mind was dominated by a painting he had done in his studio around 1974: a linen canvas on a stretcher had been coated with a whitish priming—the traditional support for painting— the artist then applied countless thin layers of paint in the tone of the priming, rubbing each succesive layer down until he produced the blankness of a smooth surface free of any familiar or pictorial input.
