Thierry Cauwet

Thierry Cauwet (born 1958 in Bourg-Saint-Maurice, France), painter and multimedia artist, defines himself as créole, shaped by the cultures of his successive residences (Paris, Rome, Martinique, Marseille, India, Réunion, and back to Paris). His work is prolific and multifaceted, employing numerous techniques: photography, video, film, painting, sculpture, installation, printmaking, stained glass, digital imagery, and more. The body—whether presented in reality or represented—is a constant in his practice, leading to a poetics of space conceived as parallel planes in time. His painting practice, initiated in 1986, establishes painterly repentance as a manifesto for the development of the artwork. This deconstruction of the painted image—through erasure and subtraction—has evolved into a system of pictorial functions that continues to expand, incorporating cutting, folding, and printing.
