Animal That Doesn't Exist

Daniel Steegmann Mangrané - Animal That Doesn\'t Exist
The first monograph of Daniel Steegmann Mangrané spanning his entire work to-date. Structured around keywords defining the artist's practice, this illustrated edition also features reprinted literary texts.
Animal That Doesn't Exist is a visual walkthrough thanks to large color reproductions and it is modeled on the glossary format, featuring precise short-form essays by art critics Benjamin Meyer-Krahmer, Filipa Ramos, and Ana Teixeira Pinto, curator Elfi Turpin, anthropologist Pedro Cesarino, and historian of science Jimena Canales. The conceptual backbone of the book is a list of 25 keywords defined by the artist together with curatorial office Rivet, which also edited the overall contents. The book also contains a section of reprinted existing literary texts as well as an extensive list of key terms that form the backbone of the entire book. This publication has a unique permutational structure designed by Studio Manuel Raeder.
The 11 booklets that conform this publication have been bound in different order for each book, creating each time a new set of references and connections between the entries of the glossary and the featured works.
Born 1977 in Barcelona, Daniel Steegmann Mangrané lives and works in Rio de Janeiro since 2004. Interested in exploring the complex interdependence of the organic world and human action, Steegmann focuses on the Amazonian Forest of Brazil, while also adopting the theoretical framework of the renowned anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, who argues against the false dichotomy between humanity and the animal world by putting forward the notion that we are all part of a shared equilibrium and incorporating the paradigm of Amerindian perspectivism. With a language close to Brazilian Neo-Concretism, Steegmann Mangrané explores the migration and affinities of forms between nature, art and architecture. Both in his fragile sculptures, made of intervened organic material, and in his creations of augmented reality, he experiments with the correspondences between organic and geometric forms and with the complex network of dependencies that exist in the biological order.
